Here's
a chat with my good mate Erik Disorder. He
makes noise experimental under the name
Sonic Disorder for years now. He's also been
in many other projects. He does a rad zine
and distro/label. He's one busy man. He has
lots of cool stuff to trade/sell so write to
him and get the music - it rules! Here's a
chat I did with him in March 2003.
Hey
Erik, how's shits? You started making
noise/experimental music at a very early
age, how did you come about to make
noise/experimental? What artists did you
first hear and what age did you put out your
first tape?
Hello
Leigh! I'm not so well now, I've been sick
for days, got the fuckin' flu... Anyway my
first attempt to do anything in the
underground besides just writing to bands
was with Carnage Consumers, a band with me
(age 13) and other young bastards who had no
idea how to play. It was super sloppy grind
played by preteens. We did a rehearsal tape
and got rid of a few copies, made it on to a
couple compilation tapes. At age 13 I was
really into speed metal and death metal and
had my first intro to grindcore when I heard
Napalm Death's "The Peel
Sessions". Less than a year later I
started getting into noise/noisecore with
bands like Anal Cunt, Dolemite And The Jive
Five, Deche Charge, The Earwigs, G Horsturz,
and all the shit/noise/garbage stuff on GWOP
Recordings.
After
all the years making noise, what keeps you
making noise and do you sell/trade much of
your stuff? Well,
I must have some kind of creative desire - I
can't say for sure why I still do it, it's
just something that I do. As for sales, I
did get a solid amount of orders from '98 to
'01. Nobody has really bought anything
except for videos lately, but that's fine
because traders are at an all time high.
Some releases move kinda quick, while others
go slow. Best sellers are: "U.S. Tour
2001" tape (108 copies), "Splitstream"
cdr ( 117 copies), split tape with Militia
Act (200 copies - sold out), and split tape
with Outermsot (200 copies). I think I would
get rid of more shit if I made new
ads/flyers, haven't got off my arse to do it
yet.
As
you have been making music under Sonic
Disorder, please tell us of the other
projects you have done, and the style, and
the other artists you've played with, for
those who don't know. Ok
from '91 to '95 I invented and/or was
involved in many so-called
"projects", mostly pathetic
shit/noise/garbage/crap. These were:
Polluted Thought, Fucking Psycho, Smegma
Cheese, Acoustical Noize Enema, Aeons Of
Agony, Minimalistic Garbage, TPHLPH!,
Toadflax, Ultra Retarded Stupid Erik, Roach
Extermination, Reefermania, The Warpheads,
MGDC, LOM, Erik Disorder, and maybe a couple
more. I can't remember. From '96 on, I was
in a punk/hc band Four Erect Members for a
few months, I was the vocalist (vo-killist).
I've made guest appearances in Fabulous
Funktastick, Mellow Reefer Head, Rotten
Flesh Fish Fucks, and Joe Milk Toast. Also
was involved in other retarded projects like
Wink Martindale, Unholy Bleeding Forehead Of
Death, Hockey Fiend, and DJ Drunk. I'm
currently in punk/metal/anything goes/improv
band We Tried To Give Some Guys A Wooden
Horse Once, But They Would Not Take It From
Us Because We Were Greek. We'll have a tape
out very soon! Also I was involved in the
Nothing Comes To Mind aka Nothing Kums To
Mind collaboration that also has Larry
Jahoosafix (currently in Sonic Disorder/MRH/WRH/etc.),
Brian Noring, Satan's God, and Dave Wren.
And last but not the least Sonic Insect,
which is a combination of Sonic Disorder and
Naked Insects.
As
Sonic Disorder has put out many
tapes/splits/etc., do you know how many
tapes it is and what about other formats
you've been on? How did the LP go, is it
sold out? (It should be, it rules!) There's
about 50 tape releases total, though a lot
are deleted/no longer available/sold
out/lost. As for other formats we've done
cdrs, split cdrs, one 3" cdr and been
on a few compilation cds. As for the LP
"Traveller's Companion Volume 3",
that was put out in the year 2000 by French
label Les Disques Bruitistes and was limited
to 100 copies. I got rid of my 10 copies
quickly, but I'm not sure if the other 90
are sold out.
What
have you been listening to as of late? And
what's some of your all time favorite
bands/artists? I've
been listening to a variety of shit from
noise to girl pop, black metal to old
country and lotsa other shit. Some all time
fave's are: Tori Amos, Death, Ramones,
Blondie, Agathocles, Outermost, Merzbow,
Vaginal Discharge, Hank Williams Sr., Iron
Maiden, Grave, Entombed, The Earwigs, Dark
Throne, Bob Marley, Bjork, Bananarama, Naked
Insects, Warsore, Spice Girls, King Diamond,
Ace Of Base, Satan's God, Sockeye, Misfits,
Venom, Bathory, Henry Mancini, John Zorn,
Vic Damone, Tankard, and most projects
involving Food Fortunada, Poopy, and Brian
Noring.
Well,
what do you get up to apart from making
music? Please tell us about your zine
Mission Mormonary and your distro/label.
Well,
I like drinking with my brother and friends,
tape trading, camping in the desert, taking
it easy with a big joint, I do collage art
and poetry once in awhile, etc. My zine is a
collection of underground/small press
writing and visual art, plus whatever else I
feel like throwin' in. I've had interviews
with: Karen Wood/Ronaldo Comics, Brian
Noring, Chuck Schuldner/Death (r.i.p.),
Shaiful/Outcast's Impact, Leigh Julian/Smell
The Stench Tapes, Terminal Descent,
Thompson/Evolution Contamination, Behind The
Fasade, and reprints of Mark Sonnenfeld and
Sonic Disorder. #4 is out now and can be
yours for $3 US (cash only) or trade. I do
the zine when I feel like doing it, it may
take 2 months or 2 years for the next one to
come out. I also write reviews of
underground music for a local
arts and music magazine called Local Muse
that runs 10,000 copies monthly. As for the
distro, I've done d.i.y. tape distro since
'92, under the name Pure Fucking Chaos. I
distribute d.i.y. tapes mostly but I also
carry some 7" records, cds/cdrs, and
professionally copied tapes. Noise/grind/hc/ambient/metal/experimental
bands from all over, hundreds of tape
titles. Disorderly Domain is a new label I
started in 2002. I've put out one video, one
double tape, one cdr (with more on the way),
and 7 tapes/split tapes. Write for a list or
maybe I could talk Leigh into putting one in
his zine?
Well,
in 2001 you did a tour (Sonic Disorder) with
Satan's God, how did that tour go? Do you
like to play live? Any funny drunk stories
from the tour? Will you play live again one
day? Yeah,
the tour was quite the experience - I had
fun, met some cool people (some who I've
been trading/writing to for years), and lost
a lot of money. I did enjoy playing live
very much. It was fun to play in front of a
supportive, interested crowd in Joplin, MO.
It was in the tattoo studio that Stan Boman
(Vaginal Discharge/Reality Impaired
Recordings) pierces at, it was also fun to
play in front of people who were annoyed and
hated us, like in Nashville, TN. After
Electric Playgirl got cut short by the idiot
anti-noise fuckhead who turned off the bar's
p.a., and after Satan's God offended
everyone, it was Sonic Disorder's turn to
take the stage. We played for almost 20
minutes with me on vocals and feedback
modulation (I read from the Necronomicon)
and my brother was on bass and vox, we got
shut off in a supreme way, since we were
using amps and not the p.a. they turned off
the power to the whole bar to cut our set
short! We almost got in a fight after I
threw a boom box at the crowd as we left! My
adrenaline was up, and we all had a good
laugh after. As for drunk stories, me and my
brother drank when we could. I got drunk as
fuck in Des Moines, IA at Brian Noring's
house. I started drinking towards the end of
the Nothing Kums To Mind recording, and
after more whiskey, bong hits and a drunken
walk to get food, I passed out and snored
loudly - my brother recorded my snoring and
used it in Sonic Disorder and Mellow Reefer
Head recordings! We also got drunk before
playing at The Mantis Art Gallery In Kent,
OH and apparently I was too busy partying to
concentrate on the gig. We freaked out on
stage at times with my brother convulsing on
the floor and me hitting myself in the head
with a tape case multiple times. It was fun!
I was kinda disoriented at times and I
tripped on some chords to unplug us
accidentally. The small crowd that stayed
was drunk and supportive and participated in
our horrendous drunken noise. A cheap
sounding bootleg recording of that show is
our side for the second split tape with
Naked Insects. Most of the Sonic Disorder
tour recordings are released on the world's
best d.i.y. tape label Smell The Stench,
check out these tapes for further tour
mayhem: "U.S. Tour 2001",
"United Slaves Of America" split
with Satan's God, "Live Disasters"
split with Joe Milktoast.
Well
please tell us what's the future like for
Sonic Disorder, what new stuff out this year
and will you be doing stuff in any other
projects?
As for new stuff this year there's "3
Inches Of Big Snort" 3" cdr on
German label Complication No. 27, I'm pretty
sure it's sold as only 13 copies were made
in special packaging that involved sugar,
salt and a plastic knife. By the time you
read this the Guarraeterna/Apple Gas - Sonic
Disorder (collab) split cdr will be out,
also Molos In The Night tape is out now on
Smell The Stench. Look out for Cranial
Crusher/Sonic Disorder split cdr, it will be
out by the time this is published or soon
after. The split 7" with Sist En 343
will finally be out this year, there was a
long delay on this because of me and I
apologize to those guys for that, but I
finally sent off my money, sounds and art
for it so hopefully it will come out
sometime soon. Out very soon will be the
Sonic Didorder Western Reefer Head split
tape, this tape will be professionally
copied with the help of Reality Impaired
Recordings. Other than that moe tapes will
be in the works, already have 30 minutes of
new shit recorded. We will be playing live
in Salt Lake City on May 30th, it's our
first gig here in 2 years. It's at a small
coffee place downtown, so we could get into
some trouble, my brother got us the gig by
saying we play free-form jazz. My brother
can play jazz on his bass while annihilate
the crowd with feedback and effects! It
should be interesting. As for other projects
expect a new Sonic Insect tape and maybe
some other shit, we'll see. As for the
future I'd like to play live more, we're
already talking about another tour with
Satan's God. The current line-up of me and
my brother Jahoosafix will be intact in the
future, tho' I still record solo sometimes
(did an hour of solo noise this year so
far).
What
do you think about these topics: queers,
beer, sex and terrorists? As
for queers, we need more in the underground!
Really, if you can find happiness in being
gay/bi/lez/tranny go for it and fuck what
others think. Beer - I love good beers. I'm
getting sick and tired of these watered down
3.2% cheap Utah beers, but since our
fucked-up mormon state controls the liquor
sales, good beer is expensive and domestic
watered down crap is cheap. Sex - oh it can
be a wonderful thing, I haven't had any in
almost a year, and most of the time I really
don't care, tho' I do still get really horny
at times. If I ever meet the sexy, awesome
lady Traci "Sexy" T in person we
sill fuck until we're drained! And I know
the she-male of my dreams is out there
waiting for me, she has a hard-on as we
speak (needless to say, I jerk off a lot).
Terrorists - fuck the Bush administration,
fuck Tony Blair and fuck religious extremist
idiots!!!
Well
mate, thanx for answering my question, this
space is for you to say whatever the fuck
you want! Thanx
to you Leigh for all the support you've
given me over the years and for the hundreds
of tapes we've traded, and thanx heaps for
this interview! I hope underground folks
will continue to put out tapes for a long
time, I love records and cds but tapes have
a nostalgic value, it's the tape traders
that got the underground going and it's
still the best part of it for me. I got well
over a thousand tapes, and I still want
more! Jahoosafix
sez: I love to rape little boys and
encourage you to do the same, perform
infanticide on your neighbors, perform
cunnilingus on llamas and obtain Mellow
Reefer Head and Western Reefer Head
products. Erik
here again saying everyone get in touch and
stay disorderly!
